Fulfilling Science & Technology in Society

Science & Technology in SocietyThis requirement is only for students graduating after 2019

Fulfilling Science & Technology in Society before Fall 2019

Students can take courses that are approved for the current Gen Ed Science of Living Systems (SLS) requirement or the current Gen Ed Science of the Physical Universe (SPU) requirement to fulfill the new Gen Ed requirement in Science & Technology in Society until the new College requirements take effect in Fall 2019.

Fulfilling Science & Technology in Society in Fall 2019 or later

Starting in Fall 2019, only courses approved for this new Gen Ed perspective will fulfill Science & Technology in Society. In summer 2019, a listing of academic year offerings that satisfy this Gen Ed requirement will be available in my.harvard.edu.

How it works

When all students are moved to the new requirements in Fall 2019,  anyone who has already completed either SLS or SPU  will automatically have fulfilled the new Gen Ed Science & Technology in Society requirement.

Anyone who has already fulfilled both SLS and SPU will automatically have fulfilled the new Gen Ed requirement for Science & Technology in Society and the new distribution requirement for Science & Engineering.

Departmental courses taken in Fall 2019 or later cannot fulfill the new Science & Technology in Society Gen Ed requirement, but might fulfill the new Science & Engineering distribution requirement.

  • For example, if a student takes LIFESCI 1A (a department course currently approved for SLS) before Fall 2019, she will get SLS credit, and, once she is moved to the new requirements, will have fulfilled the new Gen Ed Science & Technology in Society requirement. If she takes LIFESCI 1A in Fall 2019 or later (when no department courses will be approved for Gen Ed credit), this course can fulfill only the new Science & Engineering distribution requirement and cannot fulfill the new Gen Ed Science & Technology in Society requirement.

Similarly, Gen Ed courses taken in Fall 2019 or later cannot fulfill the new distribution requirement.

  • For example, a student who takes both SPU 12 and SLS 20 before Fall 2019 has completed both Science & Technology in Society and the distribution requirement in Science & Engineering.  Starting Fall 2019, students will be required to take a departmental course to fulfill the Science & Engineering requirement.
