Fulfilling Histories, Societies, Individuals

Histories, Societies, IndividualsThis requirement is only for students graduating after 2019

Fulfilling Histories, Societies, Individuals before Fall 2019

Students can take courses that are approved for the current Gen Ed Societies of the World (SW) requirement or the current Gen Ed United States in the World (USW) requirement to fulfill the new Gen Ed requirement in Histories, Societies, Individuals until the new College requirements take effect in Fall 2019.

Fulfilling Histories, Societies, Individuals in Fall 2019 or later

Starting in Fall 2019, only courses approved for this new Gen Ed perspective will fulfill Histories, Societies, Individuals. In summer 2019, a listing of academic year offerings that satisfy this Gen Ed requirement will be available in my.harvard.edu.

How it works

When all students are moved to the new requirements in Fall 2019, anyone who has already completed either SW or USW will automatically have fulfilled the new Gen Ed Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement.

Anyone who has already fulfilled both SW and USW will automatically have fulfilled the new Gen Ed requirement for Histories, Societies, Individuals and the new distribution requirement for the Social Sciences.

Departmental courses taken in Fall 2019 or later cannot fulfill the new Histories, Societies, Individual Gen Ed requirement, but might fulfill the new Social Sciences distribution requirement.

  • For example, if a student takes GOV 20 (a department course currently approved for SW) before Fall 2019, she will get SW credit, and, once she is moved to the new requirements, will have fulfilled the new Gen Ed Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement. If she takes GOV 20 in Fall 2019 or later (when no department courses will be approved for Gen Ed), this course can fulfill only the new Social Sciences distribution requirement and cannot fulfill Histories, Societies, Individuals.

Similarly, Gen Ed courses taken in Fall 2019 or later cannot fulfill the new distribution requirement.

  • For example, a student who takes both SW 24 and SW 25 before Fall 2019 has completed both Histories, Societies, Individuals and the distribution requirement in the Social Sciences.  Starting Fall 2019, students will be required to take a departmental course to satisfy the Social Sciences requirement.
