Fulfilling Histories, Societies, Individuals

This requirement is only for students graduating after 2018

Starting in Fall 2018, students can fulfill the new General Education Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement only by taking a course that has been approved for this perspective.  In summer 2018, a listing of academic year offerings that satisfy this General Education requirement will be available in my.harvard.edu

When all students are moved to the new requirements in Fall 2018, anyone who has already fulfilled the current General Education Societies of the World requirement or the current General Education United States in the World requirement will automatically have fulfilled the new General Education Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement.  Anyone who has already fulfilled both Societies of the World and United States in the World will automatically have fulfilled the new General Education requirement for Histories, Societies, Individuals and the new distribution requirement for the Social Sciences.

Departmental courses students take in Fall 2018 or later cannot fulfill the new General Education requirements, but might fulfill the new distribution requirement.  For example, if a student takes GOV 20 before Fall 2018, she will get General Education Societies of the World credit, and, once she is moved to the new requirements, will have fulfilled the new Gen Ed Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement.  If she takes GOV 20 in Fall 2018 or later, this  course can fulfill only the new Social Sciences distribution requirement and cannot fulfill the new General Education Histories, Societies, Individuals requirement.
